Predicting this year’s most popular Halloween costumes can be tricky. Looking towards the type of costumes and materials our customers have been asking for, combined with the results of a recent Halloween survey, may shed some light on what to expect.
Commonly, movies are a good source of Halloween costume ideas. In years past, we’ve seen everything from Heath Ledger’s Joker to Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as evidence of this. This Halloween, we’re actually seeing another popular Margot Robbie character getting similar attention. Robbie’s Tonya Harding from I, Tonya is generating a lot of interest. Think bedazzling leotards and similar early 1990s-inspired costumes akin to this. Even better, if you have a couples costume planned, consider going as Tonya and her mother. Yikes!
Another source of popular Halloween costumes in the last decade has been TV. With the rise of streaming and long-form serial series, TV has given us a lot of different outfits over the years with everything from Mad Men’s Don Draper to Breaking Bad’s Walter White and the Stranger Things kids. This year, we’ve seen a lot of interest in The CW’s Riverdale and the characters associated with the series, including particularly Jughead and Betty. Sweatshirts, beanies, and denim reigns supreme here. Now, if Riverdale isn’t your bag, consider creating a costume from another TV character.
There are a number of other sources where we typically see interest from Halloween costume shoppers. Marvel superhero movies are a common way to go, with this year’s Wakanda from Black Panther being preferable. Then, there’s animated series and films, like Family Guy, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and others that are known to cause a stir. This year, when it comes to animated characters’ Halloween costumes, Edna from The Incredibles has received a lot of attention. Then, there’s always interest in revisiting certain decades, be it the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s most commonly. For costumes more sexy or exploratory than these general decades-only costumes, you may wish to jump back further into the 1940s or 1920s for something super retro. 2018’s most popular Halloween costumes also include things like flamingos, cosmic fairies, and a cow. We’ll only know the day after what truly was Halloween 2018’s most popular costume.
